A real battery system. A real fire. Hundreds of witnesses. In a public UL 9540A fire test on a Fluence Smartstack, run by Fire & Risk Alliance, the R-GAS-FLAMMABLE was the first detector into alarm.

The R-GAS-FLAMMABLE is a gas detector listed to UL 2075 for BESS systems with integration into ventilation systems per applicable NFPA codes. It is not a fire detection, life safety, or suppression initiating system.
Outperformed every other detector tested.
In independent lab tests and in large scale fire tests
Independent lab · ten detectors
1st of 10
First of ten commercially available detectors to reach 10 %LEL on real cell vent gas, about 30 s ahead of the next. Run by Fire & Risk Alliance.
Independent lab · Report 1184-001
58 s earlier
First response to released LFP runaway gas in 43 s on average, against 101 s for a legacy detector in the same box.
BESS OEM · UL 9540A unit level
41 s earlier
25 %LEL hydrogen 41 s before the legacy H2 detector that triggered the purge, and 54 s before the smoke alarm.
BESS OEM · container fire tests
3 of 3
Hydrogen alarm in all three container fires, up to 301 s before the logged runaway. The legacy detectors in the same container never went into alarm.
UL 9540A is a test method a product is validated in, not a listing. Comparators and battery makers are not identified; figures are as reported, stated without adjustment. See also The mixture criterion & the data.
Stress testing.
To the requirements of global BESS and battery manufacturers
Battery manufacturer requirement · siloxane
0% loss
Three 24 h exposures to D4 and D5 siloxane vapor at 50 °C. Hydrogen response unchanged and zero held at zero. The legacy detector beside it lost 36%.
BESS manufacturer requirement · damp heat
1,000 h
Powered at 60 °C and 95 %RH. Four of four units passed: zero drift within 3% of full scale and alarm within tolerance on 25 %LEL hydrogen.
BESS manufacturer requirement · temperature
−40 to 75 °C
48 h powered at −40 °C, 48 h stored at −40 °C and at 70 °C before switch on, and 52 cycles between −40 °C and 75 °C. All passed.
EN 50270 EMC, witnessed by FM Approvals, completes the BESS manufacturer's requirement set. All stress tests were run by independent laboratories; customers are not named.

3 of 3 real runaway gas releases detected
Gas collected from an LFP cell driven into thermal runaway, released three times. Both the off-gas and the thermal runaway sensing detected it every time. Certification to UL standard pending.
